The First Step

The First Step

Oftentimes, the first step is the hardest.  This is especially true when you are feeling depressed.  But you might say that you have already taken the first step by doing what you are doing right now - investigating this website.  Therapy is one way to respond to problems in living.  When under stress, even superb coping abilities can be overwhelmed for a time.  The important issue becomes how you treat yourself as you undergo distress.  You will see if it is possible to soften your intense yearning, to triumph over feeling isolated, and foster your inner resources.

Only One Thing Is Required

It is ironic that what helps us humans to survive in this world, avoiding pain, does not work when it comes to distress.  You can’t go around it, under it or over it. You can go through it.  The duration and intensity is different for each one of us.  Pain asks one thing of us - to approach it – the very thing our common sense tells us not to do!  And if this approach can be done with intended honesty, tolerance of uncomfortable feelings and a wish for a better life, your pain can be a great teacher.

Avoidance is Common

I wouldn’t underestimate the pull to avoid distressful feelings.  The discomfort and anxiety it triggers is common. If your world is already feeling uncertain, it is not unusual to want to avoid trying anything new.  An initial consultation may help you decide what is best for you.  After that, we can start with a few sessions to see if we work well together.  It doesn’t take long to know this.
